Annual Dog Vaccines Hereford
Leadon Vale Veterinary Centre in Herefordshire offers and administers dog and puppy vaccinations to protect your pet from contracted diseases and becoming seriously ill. The pet vaccines work by exposing your pet’s immune system to variants of the virus or disease so that the antibodies can familiarise themselves with it if your dog were ever to contract it. When your dog’s body is prepared to fight off the disease, the body can respond quickly and the symptoms of illness will be reduced as the antibodies prevent the disease from developing.
Annual dog vaccines are important to maintain your pet’s immunity to the diseases that could be very harmful or fatal if contracted. Annual vaccines, or ‘boosters’ as they’re commonly known, aim to top up the dose of the dead or weakened variants of the virus. Often, these booster vaccines can be done in just one shot, but your vet will explain the process.

Core Dog Vaccinations & Annual Dog Vaccines
The initial dog vaccinations we recommend to all dog owners are the following:
- Parvovirus
- Leptospirosis
- Distemper
- Canine Infectious Hepatitis
- Rabies
- Leishmaniasis
- Herpes vaccination
- Kennel Cough
A full health check is booked for every dog that is having a vaccination to ensure that they are in good health before giving the injection.
After the initial boosters, yearly vaccinations are recommended to maintain their immune defences. Staying current with dog booster vaccines not only protects your dog’s health but also helps reduce the spread of infectious diseases within the larger dog population.
What Vaccines Does My Dog Need Annually?
Pet vaccinations are separated into the categories of ‘core’ and ‘non-core’. The recommended, most important ‘core’ vaccines protect against serious diseases that they are more likely to be affected by. The ‘non core’ vaccines are there for animals that may specifically be at risk of infection, depending on their region, the environments they live in, and if they’re travelling, amongst other risk factors.

The Importance of an Annual Kennel Cough Vaccine
The kennel cough vaccination protects against Bordetella and Parainfluenza and lasts for a year, so that it may be given at the same time as your annual vaccinations. Kennel cough is spread very easily from dog to dog via sneezing, coughing, and saliva and is extremely contagious. For this reason, any dogs that go into kennels or day care require the vaccine.
Unlike the other dog jabs, the kennel cough is administered as a spray into the nasal passages as an effective protection against the respiratory disease. While it will reduce the chances of your dog contracting kennel cough, it cannot provide full immunity due to the variety of strains involved.
Due to the vaccine being live, dogs can exhibit mild symptoms of the disease temporarily after the vaccine. If you are immunocompromised, then please inform the Vet as the vaccines will need to be performed without you present.

It is the responsibility of the dog owner to ensure their pets receive annual dog vaccines, and that if you miss the year mark, you ensure you book an appointment with your vet as soon as you can to top up your dog’s immunity. If your pet has gone two years without a booster vaccine, they will only require one vaccination to provide immunity.

How Much Are Annual Dog Vaccinations?
In the UK, puppy vaccines can cost as little as £40 upwards, but contact Leadon Vale Veterinary Centre to discuss exact prices depending on your dog’s breed and needs. Annual Booster vaccines may cost less than initial vaccinations as they won’t need as many types and the administration may be done in one shot.
